Registration now open for the webinar ‘The UN Human Rights Committee and Monitoring Opportunities’

We invite representatives of CSOs working in the field of human rights to join the sixth of the webinars the Etkiniz EU Programme is holding with experts on international human rights mechanisms, titled “The UN Human Rights Committee and Monitoring Opportunities: Preparing Question Lists, Reporting, Individual Applications” will take place on Monday, May 10th 2021.

Date: 10 May 2021, Monday
Time: 17:00 hours (GMT+3)
Speaker:  Làzarie Eeckeloo (Centre for Civil and Political Rights)
Venue: Zoom Webinars– on the internet

*Simultaneous interpretation will be available (English-Turkish).

What Will be Discussed at the Webinar?

At the Etkiniz webinar, you will get to learn about the functioning of the UN Human Rights Committee and about the details of the call the Committee issued for CSOs in Turkey, with a deadline on May 21st 2021.

What does the UN Human Rights Committee do?

The Committee is the monitoring body for the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Turkey has been a party to since 2003. Unfortunately, few human rights organisations in Turkey make use of this international mechanism, which is open to reporting by human rights organisations. For this reason, Etkiniz will host Làzarie Eeckeloo of the Centre for Civil and Political Rights, which works closely with the Committee and supports other CSOs that want to access the Committee, to discuss the human rights monitoring opportunities available.

What does the Committee’s call for CSOs in Turkey cover?

The UN Human Rights Committee expects short information notes and questions to be submitted by CSOs by May 21st 2021, to identify its list of issues for the “Areas of Concern” it will communicate to the Government of Turkey in July 2021. The Etkiniz webinar will answer your questions on how to prepare a questions list, report and submit an individual application to the Committee.
